"I'll Never Love Once again" is a song from the 2018 picture show A Star Is Born, performed by its stars Lady Gaga and director Bradley Cooper whose character sings the final chorus in the flashback scene. The soundtrack contained both versions of the song including the extended version that featured Gaga equally the sole performer. Gaga wrote the vocal with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere. Both tracks were produced past Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.

The song has received widespread disquisitional acclaim and has reached the top of the Slovakian digital charts, the top-10 of the record charts in Republic of hungary, Republic of ireland and Scotland, and the digital charts of Greece, combined-Europe, Luxembourg and Spain. "I'll Never Love Once more" received a gimmicky hit radio release in France as the album'south 3rd single on May 27, 2019. It won the Grammy Accolade for Best Song Written for Visual Media, a twelvemonth after the album's lead single "Shallow" won in the same category.

Background and composition [edit]

When Gaga was getting gear up to picture the last scene of A Star Is Born, where she sings "I'll Never Love Again", the vocalist got a telephone call that her babyhood friend Sonja Durham was in her concluding moments of Stage IV cancer. Gaga left the set and drove to meet Durham, simply she arrived ten minutes after her friend died. She asked Durham's husband if she should return to filming; he replied, "You lot've gotta do what Sonja would want y'all to practise", so she returned to the set. Co-star and managing director Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga'southward loss but Gaga was adamant most finishing the scene, then she stepped on the set and sang "I'll Never Love Again". The vocaliser said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic gift that day and I took it with me to [the] set, and I sang that song for Jackson and for her on that very same mean solar day within an hour."[1]

Forth with the picture version, the soundtrack also contains an extended version. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere.[2] [3] Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.[4] The song is performed in the cardinal of Thou major with a moderate tempo of 54 beats per minute in common time. Information technology follows a chord progression of Gadd2–Emvii–Cmaj9–D9sus in the verses and Chiliadadd2–Em7(no3)–Cmaj9/Eastward–D9sus in the chorus. Gaga's vocals bridge from Thousand3 to E5.[5] Brian Truitt of USA Today described the song as a "weepy" ballad.[6]

Release and performance [edit]

The song was kickoff chosen as the tertiary unmarried from the soundtrack on May 27, 2019 in France, where information technology was serviced to contemporary hit radio stations.[seven] After soundtrack release, the song debuted at number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United states[8] and has since sold 226,000 copies in the state, while accumulating 66 million streams.[ix] Additionally, the song has reached the pinnacle ten position in Hungary, Ireland and Scotland, and the summit 10 of digital charts in Greece, Spain and Luxembourg, reaching the chart tiptop in Slovakia.

Critical reception [edit]

The vocal received universal acclaim. In her review of the film, Melina Newman of Billboard called the ballad "stunning".[x] The magazine'southward Tatiana Cirisano ranked Lady Gaga's performance of "I'll Never Honey Once more" as the moving-picture show's best scene and wrote, "Non only are the lyrics devastatingly beautiful, but Gaga/Marry showcases her full, skyscraper-high range."[11] Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared the song to Harry Nilsson'due south "Without You" and Eric Carmen's "All by Myself", and complimented Gaga'southward "old-school finesse, timing, emotionality and lung power".[12] Pitchfork 's Larry Fitzmaurice called the song a "stunning, centre-wrenching closer" and wrote, "... fifty-fifty though 'I'll Never Love Again' is plenty effective on its ain, the dialogue-included version of the song dramatically cuts out in its final seconds the same way the film does: jumping back in time from Gaga'due south fourth dimension-stopping operation to a pivotal and heartbreaking scene that only enhances the vocal's emotional quotient".[13]

In his moving-picture show review, Ty Burr of The Boston Globe said Gaga's "climactic memorial" performance of the song "will get out you a soggy mess whether you like it or non".[14] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the song would earn Gaga an University Awards nomination for Best Original Song.[15] USA Today 's Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Beloved Again,' the film's devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her ain Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number about love and loss with searing vulnerability and grace. It'south a transcendent accomplishment that could single-handedly cyberspace the vocalist-turned-actress her start Oscar, reminding us still once again that she's one of the best vocalists correct now in whatever genre, pop or otherwise."[16]
